Real Americans (pg 3-15)

Americans are individuals that are unified by the government. We think and invent ourselves the way we desire. Yet at the same time, we are told who we should be and how we should think by the representatives in DC. We are the closest to one another whenever we have a common enemy, like during the cold war. However, when that ended we started looking at all our differences once again. We are such a great nation and at the same time we know not what we do. We set an example for the world and we still are tangled in ethical dilemmas. In the end it comes down to a choice stand together or stand alone.

I agree with the authors point that we are a tangled mess when it comes to issues of race and sex. For a country that has people from around the world we still do not seem to understand how to be united. I also agree that the media and politicians separate us as well. The media does it by reporting stories that are excite and captivate, like trying to use the stereotype that black people commit the most crimes (which is a lie), and politicians that use stereotypes to swing certain races to vote for them. Lying is the fastest way to get a group of people behind you. This author makes a good point in bring this topic up, people today seem to be sliding away from being a nation to being just individuals. I feel that one day we will come to a point where race will not matter and our government will have our best interests in mind. However, that day is far from now and we all should work to reach this goal.
